Colorado Elementary School Has Controversial Bullying Solution (Commenting on a Blog)

Colorado Elementary School Has Controversial Bullying Solution

It seems that bullying is on the rise, especially because of the increase of cyberbullying incidents.

One elementary school in Colorado, James Madison Charter Academy, has a creative way to put kids in the shoes of those kids who are bullied, but not everyone is happy about it.

Some students in grades 4-6 have been randomly selected to wear a sticker on their collar, which means other students are told to ignore them.  The school says this will help kids understand what it's like to be bullied and ignored.  One parent says that this has made her child feel even worse at school, because he has been bullied in the past.

Do you agree or disagree with this idea?

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because kids who get bullied just accept that they wont get bullied so they still make people feel bad, so now they’ll get to feel how there victims feel.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because... kids should be able to talk to there friends and in class and not be ignored. I feel the school id harassing the kids because it sounds like they are bulling the kids.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it will make them feel bad. The students feelings could be hurt and if they were bullied before they would feel ever worse. It would also make me sad because of the things that happen in this world anyway. I don’t think this system is a good idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because it teaches kids at a young not to bully anyone. Kids that bully can feel how it feels to get bullied. At any time a teacher can put a sticker on a kid that kid has to but ignored all day. It teaches kids to be caring and kind!

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because some kids are bullied like I am left out of a group and teased about what I wear isn’t cool and then have a day be bullied by classmates is just to much. I mean for one day being ignored by everyone? Who can stand being left out of a group and feel like a total outcast I mean this with my heart and know the pain. For those who bully do you really have the time to harass kids all the time? Get real and get a life!

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because I think putting a sticker on someone to exclude them from everyone for the day isn’t going to help you get what it feels like to be bullied. I think that because when you excluded on purpose, you would still get bullied, like made fun of. With this approach, the other students can’t bully the ones with the yellow sticker, so they don’t get the full feel of being bullied, they just don’t get talked to. To me, that doesn’t make sense.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because kids who bully get to see how it feels to be bullied and would probably stop bullying. The bullies get to see how their victims feel when they bully them. At anytime a teacher would put a yellow sticker on a kid’s collar and the children would have to ignore him/her all school day. This teaches children what it feels like to be bullied and they wouldn’t treat another kid like that.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it could make kids feel bad. In the video, the student said he didn’t like it. Some kids that are already being bullied could be really sad after that experience. And at lunch or recess, kids could talk and play with the kid being shunned.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a HORRIBLE idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because nobody should ever go through being bullied, or in this case “shunned”, even if it’s a “school experiment”. What if kids at James Madison Charter Academy already have been bullied and are sick of it. They would be really upset. I know I would. Another reason I think it’s a horrible idea is because the parents are furious! If I was a mom, I would keep my kids home fore a week. Just to keep them from the horrible torture of being shunned. I really think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a HORRIBLE idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because I think it will help kids not bully each other. Getting ignored will show kids it’s not nice to bully and by doing this kids won’t get in trouble. I think kids should only get a sticker if they bully somebody else. This is a really good idea to do for kids to know it’s wrong to bully.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because if it was the teachers being “shunned” they wouldn’t like it very much. What if a child was already being bullied and they are going to also be bullied by teachers now they are just making it worse for these children. What if bullies don’t even get picked that doesn’t do anything for other kids. What happens to sensitive kids, they go home and probably cry at night? There is purpose behind this but they are not doing it right they are just making the bullying situation worse by doing this!!

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because some children are already being bullied and it may make things worse for them. It’s not fair to the kids that have already experienced bullying. Also some kids are more sensitive than others and could be offended by being ignored. It could also lead to kids not wanting to be friends with one another. Schools should try to eliminate bullying but there are better ways to do that than purposely having children being ignored.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it doesn’t really teach kids how it feels to be bullied. A kid at James Madison Charter Academy School said that he did not like it; he was already being bullied in school so he already knew what it felt like to be bullied in school. Also the mother of the child said that she thought it was a good idea to teach kids about bulling, but she thought it was also ridiculous that kids were getting shunned in school. I think that it is a horrible idea because school is supposed to be fun but they are making it depressing to the kids with the sticker on their collar. This idea should be discontinued at James Madison Charter Academy School it is not helping kids it is just making them feel bad and depressed.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because this exercise can be hurtful and ineffective. This exercise can really hurt a lot of student who get pick to wear a sticker; it can make them feel unappreciated. Making students feel this way, I think is useless because I really don’t think it will help. I think, when this exercise is going on it is approving bulling for some students which can become a habit.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because this will make the kids feel left out and bullied. This will also make problems worse because the children will have no self-esteem. With no self-esteem the kids will not socialize with other kids and because of that they will have no friends. With no friends they will get picked on even more. Another way I think this isn’t a good idea is the younger kids may think its ok to ignore other children. Some kids might not understand the process and think its bullying. If they think its bulling they might feel like they are not worth anything or something like that. That is why I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids who have already been bullied have to go though it again. Its most likely traumatizing to these kids, having to go though this kind of exclusion from everyone in the school. They’re in elementary school so having nobody to play with at recess and sit with at lunch must be really hard for kids who have had friends are forced to ignore them. A child had already been bullied and had to go though it all over again. Nobody should have to go though this kind of trauma. Madison Charter Academy should find a less humiliating but effective solution for bullying.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it’s still bullying if you are being ignored. Also I think that you aren’t really seeing what it is like if your being bullied. You are also still bullying like I said, and that won’t get rid of it, I just think that you are still teaching kids to pick on other kids and encourage them. And that if those kids with the stickers on, if they don’t bully anyone, cause they are a nice person, they are going to think that its rude and just plain old mean. It’s just going to make it worse for everyone.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because it helps you learn how people being bullied feel. “They will have more insight into things that they might be doing to others that they don’t realize that they’re doing,” says the principle. I agree with that statement because she is trying to show the kids how it feels being bullied. She is trying to show the kids the pain and suffering the kids get when they are bullied, so they don’t become bullies.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids should know about bullying. Also they should know not to do it. I think this way is wrong though. The principle also said that “putting the students in a situation where they can experience what it’s like to be left out.” I agree with the principle because student should be able to learn and get along with other kids without getting bullied.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because if a kid is being bulled or has been bullied in the past then it might make them a bully. A mother said “They’ve got a good heart behind it; it’s just being approached in a very misguided way”. If kids saw it happening a lot they might end up thinking that bulling is normal. When a student has to do this it could make them have bad thoughts or actions about things.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because it can show them how bad it feels and how it makes others feel to be bullied. I also feel that it is a bad idea because it can make highly emotional kids cry and make them feel sad. If kids are already bullied in school and are picked it is unfair and makes them feel like an “outsider”. To me it is a good idea and a bad idea at the same time.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids shall not have to be bullied if they have a sticker. They should talk about bullying but not express it in that kind of way. The anti bullying idea makes people sad for people who are already bullied will feel even worse about himself. Parents are mad that their kids are feeling bad about themselves. I agree the anti bullying program is harsh for kids and they shouldn’t feel like this

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids that bully should have a more severe consequence than just to be shunned. The kids that were bulled were not just shunned they were hurt mentally. I think a better way of punishment is to have the bully be suspended or if the bullying got very bad than to be expelled. If the bulling is not very bad than I think the bully should apologies to the victim and get detention for what he or she did. Bullying is a serious matter and should be handled well

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it gives children the wrong idea about bullying. They could get the idea that you put a label (sticker) on somebody and it’s ok to ignore them. Also kids might not know what’s going on and think they’re being ignored by their friends on purpose. Even know teachers think there just teaching them to be nicer sometimes kids get the wrong idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it will make students feel bad about them for a whole day. Students chosen for the day can’t play with any body or talk to anybody for the whole day. I think that that is unnecessary. Also, if a student has already been bullied and knows what it feels like then they have to put up with a long day of being ignored for know reason. Lastly the majority of kids probably don’t even want to go through a day being ignored.

I do believe that everyone should learn about bullying but not in this type of way. The kids are not the ones bullying in this situation it’s really the principal.

Teachers are putting stickers on kids collars thinking that it’s a good idea and parents are getting upset. I hope this does not effect other school because I don’t think that other kids will like that. I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. They need encouragement.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. I know how it feels to get ignored and it isn’t fun. Students should pay attention to school and getting good grades. Studies show that when kids are unhappy with their friends and social life, they seem to get lower grades. If that was happening to me, then I would be very unhappy with the school and how they treated me. I wouldn’t even want to step in the front door of the school if I knew I was going to get ignored all day. All because of a little sticker I know children in James Madison Charter Academy are getting ignored. They didn’t even do anything wrong and are getting punished for...nothing. I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it proves to show that others even teachers can also bully kids or adults too and students are already being bullied, and the school does not need to do it too! I personally believe that they should put it only on the kids who bully others to show how it to be bullied, because if you do it that way then the kids who don’t bully others should not feel how it is to be bullied and they get something they do not deserve. So I believe that they should watch to see others and see if they get bullied then get the person who bullied them should have to wear the sticker and get shunned. So it is like saying that the kid who did not bully others then they should receive the punishment though they did not do anything. There are also way it could be good like if the person who did the bulling should receive the punishment. Also others should not have to worry about what is happening and they should participate in something with other kids and join the crew. That is why I believe that others should not be shunned in my own opinion.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because children have no choice whether or not to participate. Children who will never be bullied otherwise are being forced to be “shunned” for a whole day. My whole 4th and 5th grade experience I have never been bullied or witnessed bullying and bullying is not a problem in those grades as much as it is a problem in middle school and high school. Some children may forget their experience and if they do then they will probably forget it by the time that they are in high school. Therefore, this is a bad idea because children that will never otherwise participate in bullying are being forced to participate.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because they will realize what they are actually doing to hurt people. For example, if someone purposefully ignores someone else, it will make the victim feel very bad about who they are, like no one wants to listen to what they want to say. The kids with the stickers will realize how hurtful it is to ignore others, and the method will hopefully keep them from bullying other kids by paying no attention to them. It will most likely keep the Academy a bully-free zone with kids and staff being friendly to each other all day. In conclusion, I propose that James Madison Charter Academy's uncommon method for anti-bullying was a beneficial idea for their students.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it can hurt people that are already being bullied and it can remind them how bad they felt. Also when the kids are bullied they can do some bad things like suicide. Some kids that are already bullies might see how fun it is to bully people so they would get the wrong idea and keep bulling people. If they keep bulling people then a lot more people in school will get into fights and arguments. Then a lot more people would get hurt.

The ways of treating other people when they bully other people is to give them more home work or talk to their parents, because making them not talk to other people or to their friends is not fair. So that is why they should not make other people wear sticker because it is not right.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because yes, kids do feel like they are being bullied, but sometimes that is bad. Some of the kids that are wearing the sticker have or are being bullied, so there feelings are softer. Also, the people who are not wearing the sticker might not follow the rules, and torment the person who is wearing the sticker, which will make a bad experience even worse. Lastly, the people who are wearing the sticker might be used to being the center of attention, so not being involved might make them feel bad.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because I think it might be teaching kids to bully. They take one kid at a time and tell other kids to ignore him or her for a week; it could give kids the idea to bully. Plus if you were the kid with sticker on you would loose all your friends for a week, sit alone at lunch, have no one to play with at recess, and no one to talk to. Even though the teachers and principle tell them not to tease the kids that have worn a sticker, some student is going to. The school is going to loose students because many parents are going to disagree with this idea. I might not be parent but if I had a kid I would not want my student to be the one with the sticker. You want to teach everyone not to bully but this is not the way.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. My reason why I think this forcing bullying because everyone is not talking is just like one person getting bullied and embarrassed to go to school. Also it’s just making the child more afraid of himself/herself of getting any friends. As a result this is why I think this experiment is not a good idea for the kids.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because the bullies should feel the pain the others were going through. But I know the parents wouldn’t agree with it. The parents don’t know what their kid is doing. The kids should be punished. There should be no argument. The kids should suffer for the same amount of time.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because ignoring someone is just not helping with the whole bullying thing. People that are your friend before the bullying test can cheer you up and not put you down like bully’s. Being ignored is not what every student does, some students feel bad and want to help not make it worse.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. I think it is a good idea because it will make the person with the sticker will be depressed and bad about them self and that will show them not to bully other people. That should put those nasty people in there place.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because some kids are already bullied. If someone accidentally gave someone a sticker that is already being bullied then it will make them feel even worse. Also, it could make people feel uncomfortable to leave people out because they might be a very kind person. Lastly, some people might get depressed because they might not know that nobody is leaving out on purpose and they will get really sad.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because if you have been bullied before, and you get chosen to ware the sticker, it can make you feel even worse than you normally do when you get bullied. Another reason why I think this experiment is bad is that when you get left out or ignored, it makes you feel bad and makes you want to do things you don’t normally do, like commit suicide, runaway, or even never go back to school. This experiment could make you do those things if you get picked. Instead of doing this experiment, I believe that they should try a different approach. I believe they should make bullies stay at least one hour after school and watch an educational movie on how bullying is bad and how it makes others feel, that way they get a good picture of how others feel.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it probably makes kids feel worse when they already felt bad. Being ignored is the worst type of bullying you never know if someone is talking bad about you. Also wearing a sticker kind of make you the odd man out so you are even a bigger target for bullying. In the end this is probably increasing bully by a ton.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because the kids at the school are being ignore and could not play, talk or could not work with other kids for who no’s how long. I also believe that it was cruel to not let kids make friend or even become friend because what if they were new at the school and was from a different state and didn’t know anybody at the school and they didn’t know their way around the school. If the kids were hurt and the teachers weren’t around the kids could not talk to the kid that got hurt and could not help. Another reason I pick that it was a bad idea is because it may hurt their feelings because they cant talk to each other. The kids will not get the ful learning experiment that they should.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it encourages bullying. It also sets a bad example to maybe the little kids that go to the school that are in kindergarten or 1st grade. Telling kids to shun each other on purpose is one thing but what if someone is shunning someone purposely? How will you be able to tell who is purposely doing it? Over all I think this approach to bullying is a horrible idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it does not teach kids not to bully it teaches kids how it feels to be shunned. The kids are selected at random so they could already be bullied if they are already bullied then it just adds to the hurt. The kids can’t talk to any one so they can’t socialize with there friends. There are many bullies in schools and they need to stop but they need to address it in a different fairer way.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because if a bully gets a sticker they will notice what its like to be annoyed. After the experience the bully may stop what he/she is doing. It may also impact bystanders that get a sticker because they would learn that they should react. The system may also stop kids from bullying in the future.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because... I think it will make problems worse because they have no one to play with, no one to eat with, and the might pair up with a bully during this situation. They will also have no self-esteem and they won’t want to enter school EVER AGAIN. After, the children wear the sticker there is a possibility that they may bully because the children who were ignoring them know have to wear the sticker and they could ignore and still be mean at the same time.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because bullies are broken-down inside, and it’s really wrong that the authorities of JMCA would break other kids down just so they could “experiment” if showing the students how it feels to be picked on will decrease the amount of bulling in the school. I honestly couldn’t imagine a teacher saying, “Here, put this sticker on so no one talks to you, and then kids can learn a lesson about not bulling.” The teachers are just bulling the students their selves. This is why I think James Madison Charter Academy's approach to bullying is a bad idea.

Another reason this is a bad idea is because kids aren’t test monkey’s they are human beings with feeling, friends, and lives. Finally, it is not fair to the kids and parents they are being treated like this.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because for students that have been bullied before or are very sensitive the experience could be traumatizing. Also, this approach could inform bullies which students will break under pressure, giving the bullies easy targets. The school’s approach is not to far from a realistic situation that ensures the school’s students the privileges of going to each class without being hurt by a bully. Although James Madison Charter Academy has the right idea to inform their students about bullying, this type of lesson should not be a hands-on experiment, and it should be a lesson that informs their students, but does not hurt them. A better idea is teaching students about bullies in a class, rather than humiliating them in front of their peers.
