Is Online School Really a Good Idea?  Trimester 2

What do you think about going to school in your pajamas?  No, I'm not talking about pajama day, I'm talking about online school.  Would you like the flexibility of being able to take Math quizzes online and chatting with other students through Face Time or a Google Hangout?  Would you miss your friends and hanging out at lunch or does online school sound perfect to you?  Remember that you'd never get a snow day.  Before you answer this question, check out this video where a high schooler sums up the pros and cons, (the good things and bad things), about online school.

When a person is sick and needs a new organ, it can take a long time to get one.  People have to be put on a special transplant list and may have to wait months or even years before they receive a new organ.  However, waiting for someone else to donate their organ could soon be a thing of the past.  Scientists are experimenting with bioprinters, printers that use human cells and tissue instead of ink, to print 3-D printed organs!  While this may seem like a great idea, some people are afraid of what could happen if 3-D printed organs become a reality.

Pete Basiliere, research director at Gartner says: "These initiatives are well-intentioned, but raise a number of questions that remain unanswered. What happens when complex 'enhanced' organs involving nonhuman cells are made? Who will control the ability to produce them? Who will ensure the quality of the resulting organs?"

Media Literacy Week Survey

Media Literacy Survey Link for Students:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9SNNVP7

---------------------------------------------

More info. about US Media Literacy Week:

This week is the first annual United States Media Literacy Week.

What is media literacy?  It’s the ability to understand messages and information we get from the internet, social networking, the radio, the news and magazines.  From the Kardashians to the conflicts in the Middle East, we are bombarded with media each and every day.

The Mets may have lost the World Series last night, but YOU can decide the winner this week.  To celebrate this special week, this week only, teachers and students can take a quick survey posted on the library blog to pick their favorite type of media.

Tomorrow, the adults in our community are voting in local elections.  You can vote this week too-let AMS know your favorite kind of media:  internet, social networking, the radio, the news or magazines.  Cast your vote this week.

The results will be shared next week.

If you have any questions, please see me in the library.  Thank you.  -Mrs. Ekstrom

"Honk if You Hate Bullying" Trimester 3

"Honk if You Hate Bullying"

When Jose Lagares found out his 4th grader was bullying other kids, he punished his son.  He grounded him and even made him do hard labor, but nothing seemed to work.  Then Mr. Lagares came up with a creative idea.  He made his son stand on a street corner with a large sign that said: "I'm a bully. Honk if you hate bullies."  Mr. Lagares said "It was just the final straw, and it seemed to work."

When other people found out about this news story, there was a public outcry.  Some people thought this was an awful idea and that Mr. Lagares was bullying his own son.  Others supported Mr. Lagares unusual idea.  But Mr. Lagares still believed in what he did and stood out on the corner with this own sign that said, "I'm not sorry. Honk to stop bullying."
