Colorado Elementary School Has Controversial Bullying Solution

Colorado Elementary School Has Controversial Bullying Solution (Commenting on a Blog)

It seems that bullying is on the rise, especially because of the increase of cyberbullying incidents.

One elementary school in Colorado, James Madison Charter Academy, has a creative way to put kids in the shoes of those kids who are bullied, but not everyone is happy about it.

Some students in grades 4-6 have been randomly selected to wear a sticker on their collar, which means other students are told to ignore them.  The school says this will help kids understand what it's like to be bullied and ignored.  One parent says that this has made her child feel even worse at school, because he has been bullied in the past.

Do you agree or disagree with this idea?

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because some of the students were already bullied and this could make it worse. Also if you are randomly selected to do it after you could be bullied. Lastly if a bully is selected then they could become angry and get revenge on everyone who ignored them.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because the man who organized it should have know who was bullied and who was not bullied. One parent was upset that her son got picked because he was already bullied in the past and it is even more traumatizing. The women’s exacted response was “That my son was forced to endure more isolation and pain.” I am very upset with this and I wonder how long he had to endure this pain it just sickens me. That is my stand on this idea and whom every made this up should be punished.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because I think it will make people feel shy and I think the real bullies will take this literal and continue to ignore that kid. I agree with the professor that it will traumatize kids and make them self conscious. I do agree that it teaches kids the value of how bad bullying is, but there are too many bad people to help this concept. It is very unfortunate and I hope that one day this concept will teach kids and bullies that it is not ok and bullying needs to stop!

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because Jaana Juvonen, a professor in psychology at UCLA, says that this activity can traumatize children who have been bullied before. She also says that this activity may traumatize children who are more sensitive in general. A mother of a child that was chosen to wear the sticker says that her child was already bullied was forced to endure more isolation and pain.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because... its very mean to the students. And especially to the kids who have been bullied. They have to get ignored by everyone in the school. And some kids were used to it. Then they have to go threw it again.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because I don’t think it is fair to the students. I think that because, that isn’t fair if a student has that sticker on there caller and they ask another student a question or say hi to them they have to get ignored. That could really hurt the students feeling if they have to wear the sticker on there callers.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because... then students will understand how bullying can really have consequences and can make people feel bad about themselves.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because the sticker is like a tag for bullies. The bullies will see the sticker and pick on the kids that have the stickers. That’s why I think that bullying is a bad idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it can really hurt someone who experienced bullying in the past. If a child had just overcame the problems of bullying and had to go back to the pain of not fitting in it could really make them socially unstable. It could also make the child very self conscious about the way people are treating them and looking at them. Also there are too many bullies to stop with one schools approach if we really want to stop this problem we should all work together.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because the people at lest have to try, and deal with the problems. For example the woman who is the commenter should at least use coping skills for her son. Another reason The Academy should keep doing it is because it will increase the people but then drop the amount of people from being hurt to feeling better. Also you may have to get used to it but sometimes life can be life or it could work, You never know. One last reason is if that didn’t work try Parsons Child and Family© or You can help the child too!

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids with the tag on their collars are being assaulted more than they were before they had the tags on to ignore them. One parent says that this has made her child feel even worse at school, because he has been bullied in the past. Even if the person with the tag on there collars had friends that wanted to talk to him or her they still would have to ignore them. That is why I think that James Madison Charter Academy’s idea was a very poor decision about approaching bullies.

Jaana Juvonen, a professor of developmental psychology at UCLA, that the “ethics and impact” of such an exercise are “debated.” She also argued that “when just a couple of children experience this for an entire school day it can be traumatic, especially for those who are more sensitive in general or for those who are already bullied.” Anne Shearer-Shineman, the principal of public charter school James Madison Charter Academy, which they are “putting the students in a situation where they can experience what it’s like to be left out.”

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea.
One reason I think that the bullying idea is an awful idea is because I think that the principal should have to take this sticker on them too them they would know how the sticker changes their daily life. School is hard enough without your own principal bullying you. I thought principals’ were supposed to be your pal. This principal needs to have this done to her because no one likes a bully. Especially when it is your own principal that is bullying a student.

Also it can have an impact on the kids for the rest of their lives. That’s why I think James Madison Charter School’s take on bullying is cruel.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Jaana Juvonen, a professor of developmental psychology at UCLA she argued that “when just a couple of children experience this for an entire school day it can be traumatic, especially for those who are more sensitive in general or for those who are already bullied.” Even though this experiment is suppose to show how being left out feels it makes the kids sad to be left out and ignored.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because I think it is very unfair. They should only do it to the bullies to make them know how it feels. It is not helping the kids that are already bullied. It just makes them feel worst about themselves. This also means that people might have to ignore their friend. Then you will feel like you are bullying your best friends.

They should only put the stickers on the bullies so they know what it feels like. They shouldn’t just randomly choose kids because the teachers don’t know the kids background or if they have ever been bullied before. It is even unfair for the kids not having the sticker because if one of there friends has the sticker than they wont be able to talk to there friend.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because a lot of kids are bullied, and they could be put through that again. I’m glad that they are making an attempt to cease bullying, but this is making it worse. If some kids are bullies, they can tease the kids wearing the stickers just because they got chosen. They could also bully the kids because they got ignored all day. A lot of kids who are victims of bullying do not have any friends. Say if they did have friends, they might think that they’re friends are ignoring them on purpose. It would make them feel like they do not have any friends, which is part of the point. But, the “Victim of the Sticker” (as I like to call it) might not want to be friends with the other child the next day, since their friends ignored them. If the children who bully others were to wear the sticker, they would indeed see what it is like to get bullied. But, they could disregard the fact that they knew what it was like to be bullied. They don’t care that they were ignored for one day; they just want to hurt other children’s feelings. They know that they’re still top dog, and that no one would ever shun them like that. It’s an all around bad idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids that already get bullied have to go through a day or how ever long they do the experiment without the one friend that they may have. I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Also, if they are already being bullied this “experiment” might make it even worse. The bullies might keep ignoring the person who had the sticker on so they could annoy them as well. Finally, Parents have problems with this method and schools should not do things to the children that the parents rebel against and do not approve of.

The teachers shouldn’t do this idea because they just don’t know if that kid was being bullied and if he was then to make him go thorough it all day and alone would just be sickening to see or even hear about.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because kids who are unaware to the feeling of being left out experience what others are feeling. Sometimes they even experience what they are doing to others but not realizing it. James Madison Charter Academy is doing a good thing to aware their students, but some have problems and are more sensitive to being ignored. One thing they could’ve done to help this is ask the parents if their children have any problems like these and cannot handle the loneliness. Also, the school could’ve consulted any records of bullying so the victims will not experience the hurtfulness again. The James Madison Charter Academy's approach is a good idea, but they could’ve thought about it more and not added more pain to bullying victims.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids’ being singled out like this is just as bad as regular bullying. I think that this should be an optional activity in school, or maybe they should’ve voted as a school before launching this on all the kids. I also think this is a bad idea because walking around school being ignored by everybody would hurt, and kids would be so caught up in being angry at kids, or angry at the principal, that they would not learn anything from this experiment. The goal of this situation was to make kids see what it feels like to be ignored. But being ignored isn’t how most kids are being bullied. Kids are being bullied by social networking, or being called names. This is why I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea.

One mom was upset because of this. “They’ve got a good heart behind it, it’s just being approached in a very misguided way,” Johanna Myers said. The kids shouldn’t be treated like this just to see how it feels to be bullied. If anything, they should only be punished by this.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because they just randomly picked kids, and they don’t know if some of those kids they picked have been bullied before. The idea of randomly picking makes it even worse, if they picked kids who bully then it might not seem like a terrible idea. This odd way of handling bully situations might have a bad influence on the kids and may cause them to start bullying themselves. Another reason why would be, what if the kids’ friends don’t want to ignore them? What happens to the friends???
This approach on bullying might cause some of the kids’ grades to drop, or they won’t want to attend school. What if the parents don’t want their kids in that type of situation? The parents should at least have a say in this new idea. Why not ask the parents if they would want their children put through pain and suffering while they’re in school? There are so many things wrong with the idea, having kids put through that everyday at school. In a way the school is bullying the children into doing this experiment… this could not solve bullying situations.

It is very rare that you will pick a bully because it is like a 1 in 1,000 chance that it will happen. If it is a bully that is chosen, the bully may or may not feel bad enough to stop bullying. Also, the people that are chosen will feel really bad. People who are bullied will feel even worse and probably something bad will happen to them.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it causes students to have a bullying experience. This approach is telling the others kids to ignore the one with the sticker causing them to become a bully. The student wearing the sticker has to be ignored the entire day. This can be traumatic to all kids, especially those who do have past bullying experiences. I believe students should know about bullying without having to go through a traumatic experience.. Any student who is chosen can have troubles trusting there peers after being neglected by them for an entire day. The idea of being ignored by my peers an entire day is already scary enough; actually having it happen though must be truly frightening.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. His mom as the video said was furious about this. She claimed that being “shunned” because of the sticker that you have to wear on your collar is the wrong approach. I agree with that because to be educated and taught about not to bully is good. But to make someone feel bad even when they can control that id just wrong. The principal of this school says “It will teach them not to do to others, because sometime they don’t even realize they are doing it.” Well making them sit alone to realize this is not the right to do. Like she had said they don’t even realize they are doing it being lonely for a day most likely won’t do anthing about it. It will just make kids feel bad for a day, a long horrible day.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because if a kid takes it the wrong way then that kid is going to be very depressed. Also I think that the mothers should say something about the “sticker.” That is why I think it is a bad idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because even though they do have good intentions, this experience seems to be having a major effect on students. While doing what its like to be bullied is understandable, because in a bullying situation, bystanders can make it worse. But using this approach, it seems that students who are ignored feel worse than they did before, even if it just lasts a single school day. School is for education and fun, and talking to your friends is basically the fun. But having that taken away from you doesn’t seem right. Students should be able to talk with their friends. If the student that had the sticker placed upon them could talk to their friends related to the bullying for the day, maybe new ideas can be formed. You need friends to cheer you up, and in a bullying situation, they can provide comfort. Without support from a student’s friends, how can they be able to help in the bullying situation? For students that have been bullied before, this experience isn’t for them. I think it would prove to be better if teachers and other adults asked this ahead of time, so that way, maybe the students who weren’t bullied have a better understanding on the concept.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because the program could emotionally affect kids in school. If the kid with the sticker on their collar was already being bullied or was bullied in the past it could bring back all the bad memories they had earlier in their lives. If they start taking this further too younger kids it could scare them for life also emotional kids could overreact and say they don’t want to go to school anymore.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it makes kids feel bad about them selves. I also think it is a bad idea because the whole idea of this is to stop bullying, but this is “bullying” and it isn’t fair that only some kids get picked to be bullied. The final reason I believe this is not very good idea is because some kids that are picked could just be done getting bullied by a kid, and now the school has chosen for this kid to be bullied again.

One mother said that this experiment has made her child feel worse about himself because he had been bullied in the past. Putting stickers on random students will only hurt their feelings. Whoever came up with this idea needs to rethink the effect on the students who are being ignored.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids are being put in the position of a victim randomly. One parent says that this has made her child feel even worse at school, because he has been bullied in the past. Kids could be traumatized. Kids could think they’re being betrayed by their best friends.

Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because kids that feel ignored will be depressed and may not be able to focus on their school work. Also I think it’s a good idea because then the bullies could get chosen to wear the sticker and they would feel what it is like to be bullied. Also it is unfair for kids who are being bullied to get chosen and have to experience the pain again.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because if the person selected to wear a sticker is a bully than they will know what it feels like to be bullied and ignored. Although I think that if the teachers are good teachers they will know what kids are bullies and what kids are bullied. So I do not think that the kids chosen to wear a sticker should be chosen at random. They should select the students that bully other children to wear a sticker, not the ones who have been previously bullied.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it doesn’t prevent bullying. It will still go on. When the kids wear the stickers it will make them feel worse. The sticker might make kids lose friends if they have to wear the sticker for the day. An example is the boy in the video. He felt really bad after wearing the sticker. I also think it is a bad idea because students might sue the school for making their kids feel bad.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it could make students feel hurt and left out. If a kid was already bullied and they have to be ignored for a day they could feel even more pain from being bullied. One mom was angry because her son, who was already bullied, had to go through more pain. I think that the school should find out who was bullied and who bullies other kids so kids who have been bullied don’t have to be ignored. This is why I think this approach to bullying is a bad idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because it teaches kids what kind of damage it can do to somebody else’s life that does get bullied. Most bullies don’t realize how bad it makes somebody feel when they ignore or pick on somebody. But I think one thing is unfair, I think these people should put the stickers on people that have not been bullied and not put them on the kids that have. This just make the kid that has already been bullied feel even worse about themselves because they have to go through bullying again when they have already experienced it for real. So I do believe this experiment will have an effect on students as long as they only put the stickers on the bullies and bystanders.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a good idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a good idea because it will help people that are not bullies or not bullied know how the kids who are bullied feel. I also think it will help bullies see how bad they are making other people feel about themselves. The experiment will help teach many people in the school about the effects of bullying. I think that the teachers should choose someone who is not already a target, but choose the people who are the bullies or bystanders. That way they do not make it worse for students already targeted. I believe that this experiment will have a good outcome for everyone at James Madison Charter Academy.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because that makes whoever wearing the sticker feel insecure and upset because their friends cannot make them feel better. A sticker on someone’s collar is certainly NOT a way to solve bullying. I can tell that the school is trying to do something good, but forcing students to be shunned is definitely not the best way to do it. Calling an assembly is a much more civilized way to handle the issue.

I hope other schools will not use this idea for how much it can hurt other students.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because it makes them feel sad and upset. It seems like the school is bullying them because they are knowingly not making them not feel appreciated. Also, if the parents don’t like the idea then the school should not do it. Parents have said that it has made their kids feel worse because they have been bullied in past. Instead of using the sticker approach to attempt to stop bullying, James Madison Charter Academy could have more anti-bullying programs.

I believe that bullying is bad but putting a sticker on a kid’s collar and having them be ignored for a day is not a good idea. This could make parents very mad and could make population go down in the school. My idea would be to have anti bullying programs. Also they should try talking to them about bullying and not showing. I think that James Madison Charter Approach is a bad idea.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because they could start feeling worse that they are the ones chosen because it creates the child to be ignored. This could also make them self-conscious about it because they might have been bullied in the past and then to ware that sticker could remind them of when they got bullied. James Charter Academy has good intensions but may have bad feed back from students feeling self-conscious and parents getting mad at the teachers for there decision to make there child ignored.

I think James Madison Charter Academy's unusual approach to bullying is a bad idea. Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because the select number of students that have been picked to have the sticker on the collar will be ignored witch always makes kids feel bad.

Selecting students to be ignored so they can experience bullying is a bad idea because some students might not want to be ignored. The students would want to be ignored by bullies, but not by anyone else. If the student doesn’t have a sticker on their collar, they will not be ignored by anyone, including bullies. The student will get bullied. Now, students will be ignored by their friends and teachers.
