Summer 2010

Hi AMS students, faculty and staff,

I hope you're all enjoying your summer! It has been hot, hot, hot so far! I hope you've been able to stay inside where you might have AC or have headed to a shady spot to read a great book.

Has anyone read Rick Riordan's new book, The Red Pyramid, (Book 1 of the Kane Chronicles)? I have read two outstanding reviews. One APHS Summer School teacher told me that if you liked The Lightening Thief, you'll love this one. I'm anxious to get my hands on it to read and to add to our library collection.

There has been lots of Twilight series action this summer. The movie Eclipse was released and Stephanie Meyer's novella, (a short novel), The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner could be read for free online for one month.

Students AND teachers: don't forget that the third and final book in the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay, will be released on August 24th! I have to wonder if like Stephanie Meyer, Suzanne Collins will be writing another book in this series. What do you think?

Right now I am reading The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake and The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. The Skin I'm In is the story of 7th grader Maleeka as she tries to overcome bullies, deal with "mean girls" and a new teacher who is all in her business.

You may have already read The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton if you have completed grade 7. Mrs. Dowd and Mrs. Magill's Literacy classes read this gripping book chock full of characters who have to confront complicated situations. Both of these books can be found at our library.

I'm looking forward to heading to the ocean and I'm taking The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult and Small Avalanches and Other Stories by Joyce Carol Oates. The last book is a book for "young adults" and the other two are for adults. This month, I had a chance to see Joyce Carol Oates read a short story and answer questions at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. It was a great opportunity to understand how she gets her ideas for short stories and novels. The AMS Library owns two of her books, Big Mouth & Ugly Girl and Freaky Green Eyes. Both are excellent books about characters struggling with school and family drama.

So, what books are you reading/have you read this summer?

I was looking for some summer reading books in our library in June, my heart set particularly on The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, after hearing so much praise from both students AND teachers. I wasn't surprised to see they'd already been scooped up, so Mrs. Heilmann was very generous and lent me her copy of The Hunger Games. I had some other books in the works so I didn't get to it until about a week ago, and in a way I am glad I saved it. It did not disappoint! All the reviews I'd heard and read were right on and I've since recommended it to all of my family members and friends and now to you!!!

Have fun with your summer reading, can’t wait to hear your reviews!

Ms. Ekstrom loaned me a book she recommended; The Hour I First Believed, by Wally Lamb. It is for adults or older teens. The subject matter was disturbing, as it dealt with the Columbine shootings and the consequences for survivors. It really made me think about the long term "collateral damage", beyond the obvious loss of life in the initial attack. The book goes beyond Columbine into the protagonist's family history, which was very interesting, and for which I made a connection to the Quakers' work for abolition, prison reform, suffrage and peace.

My English teacher friend (not at AP) had recommended Going Bovine by Libba Bray. I have to say the book disappointed me. It is labeled young adult but to me some of the topics discussed make it more of a high school level read. The book is about a high school boy who gets Mad Cow disease and then goes on some crazy adventures. It was a long book which would not normally bother me if it was a good read but I felt like I was dragging through pages 200-400. It picks up in the end and I am glad to say I finished it but overall it was not something I would recommend to a friend!

I love reading! My name is Zachary and I'm in 6th grade. Since Christmas I've read the following series: Charlie Bone, The 39 Clues, Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. I look foward to reading more great books from the library!

Ms. Ekstrom said...

Hi Zachary! If you loved the books in those series you might want to try the Gregor the Overlander series. It is by Suzanne Collins and book 1 is simply called Gregor the Overlander. This fantasy series has lots of action, adventure and some close calls. I hope you'll check it out sometime.

Mrs. Ekstrom, I would like you to know that ALL FOURTEEN BOOKS I took out over the summer were extremely good books and I would recommend any of them to anyone! I have already taken the next three of the Tomorrow series and finished two of them. A very well written series and I can never put them down or wait longer then two days to get the next book!

Ms. Ekstrom said...

Hi Jake,
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the Tomorrow series by John Marsden, as well as your other summer loan books! I know that Mrs. Dowd really liked Tomorrow When the War began as well. I am really looking forward to starting this series. Good luck at the high school and keep in touch! Ms. Ekstrom

Mrs. Ekstrom,
As of right now I’m waiting until my birthday. My grandma is taking me to the Northshire, like every year, and I’m hoping I can buy the whole Hunger Games series and hopefully the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series that I've been loving since I first read it. So far high school is easy, though I'm glad I only have a few years left.

I read a really good book this summer. It was called 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It was about this girl that commented suicide and she left tapes behind. There were 13 tapes to explain why she commented suicide. The 13th person was the one that she blamed the most.

This summer I read a book called Tangerine, by Edward Bloor. Tangerine is a book about a boy who has poor eyesight, and really loves to play soccer. The main theme of this book is, 'lies cause pain. and the longer they go on the worse they get.' This book is compelling, and you never want to put it down. I would recommend this book to all kids in the middle school.

I'm reading Twelve Travelers, Twenty Horses. It's a book about a slave who is sold to a really strange owner. This owner treats them like people, not like animals. By some miracle, Jacob (the slave boy)was reunited with his Mamma and his friends from his first plantation, Milo, Big Ceaser, Cloe, Polly the cook, and Hannah the healer. This new owner is The Honorable Mr. Clearence Higginboom. They are traveling to California by coach. Is Honorable Mister Clearence Higginboom so honorable? Jacob hears of a plot to sabatoge the Pony Express mailing news of Lincoln winning the election, what will happen.....not to mention trouble on the way to California.

This summer I read a great book called The Music of Dolphins. It's about a girl named Mila, she's a 15 year old girl who grew up in the ocean and was raised by dolphins. No one saw Mila as herself, they only saw her as the dolphin girl. Mila wants to be accepted. Mila doesn't think she belongs in the real world, she thinks she belongs in the ocean with her dolphin family.

This summer I read Emma Burning, by Shannon Hale. I actually read part of it out of the book, but I also downloaded it onto my ipod. Emma Burning is the sequel to the incredible book, The Goose Girl. They are fantasy books where some people can talk to birds, horses, and even to the elements around the characters. Emma struggles to control her fire ability, she has to learn to control it to avoid being burned alive! That and the war with the land Tira puts Emma into a very tricky position.
