Banned Books Week: 2011

Did you know that this year, Banned Books Week is September 24 to October 1?

Are you now wondering what Banned Books Week is? To put it very briefly, it is a week where we celebrate the right to read the books we'd like to.

"Free Your Mind: Read A Banned Book", is this year's Banned Books Week tagline from the ALA, (American Library Association). When we read a book that has been banned, we are excercising our First Amendment Right, which includes the freedom to read.

The efforts of librarians, teachers, authors and booksellers have stopped the majority of books on the banned books list from being completely banned.

Why would people want to ban books? ALA notes that most books are banned due to situations having to do with sex, profanity and racism or unpopular ideas.

Who tries to ban books? Book banners are any individuals seeking to remove certain books from schools or libraries who are trying to block others from ideas that they feel are offensive to them or may be different from their own.

Are your surpised that Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Bone by Jeff Smith, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl are just several in a long list of books that have been challenged in some states and banned in some states and countries?

What do you think about book banning?

When you post a comment, please use your first name and last initial, your ELA teacher's name and your block. Remember that your blog comments will receive a grade.

My opinion of books being banned is bad. I don’t think books should be banned from certain areas and places. For example, in the South they’re banning books from kids because they don’t want the kids to learn about what happened to them in the past. I think they should be able to know about what happened to the South in the past because its history. The kids are going to find out eventually, so why not now? That’s what I think about books being banned from different areas and places.

Zach H. C1D1 Mrs. Reese said...

I think banning books is wrong because people should learn about what happened in their states and countries during the past. People want to read about slavery that happened in their states or country. They want to learn about it but they can’t because they aren’t allowed to read it in their state. You should be aloud to in case it happens again and they won’t be warned to know what happened in the past. That is why I think that people should be aloud to read what ever book they want where ever they want.

I think that the books shouldn’t be banned. A lot of kids read some of the books, that would be banned. If they were going to, they should put an age limit on the books, instead of totally banning them. Some of the books like, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, are really good books and series that most kids and teenager’s read, and enjoy. Reading books should be the reader’s decision on what to read, not by what other people say. Even, some kids haven’t had the time, or choice to read the books yet, and they would never be able to if they were banned. Twilight, and Bridge to Terabithia, are just two books that have a story in them, that many kids, would image, and picture in the head. Once again, I don’t think certain books should be banned.

I think that banning books isn’t right. I don’t think that it’s right because people can have lots of different interests in books. Banning them may be upsetting to people who like that genre. Banned books can make sense when they are not age appropriate, or against some peoples cultures and hurts their feelings. My opinion is that if the book would offend that person, then they shouldn’t read it. You choose what you read so it would be your own fault if you choose a book that would offend you.

Truthfully, I both agree and disagree with certain books being banned. If you’d like to know my opinions on this educational debate, then keep reading.
First of all, there are a few reasons that I think that some books should be banned in some areas. The main reason I’m saying this is because some people don’t appreciate having some books in their area because maybe it could offend their childhood by possibility, it may be too violent for them, or maybe it could affect their religion or culture in some way.
But I also think that no matter if it’s banned or not, some people may really want to read a certain book; since someone may be interested in it, they’re probably thinking “Why in the world did they ban this book?” Maybe that specific person didn’t read the whole series. I’d personally have no idea at all why they’d want to read a book that’s banned in their area.
So overall, there are some good things and some bad things to having books banned. I clearly can’t remember if there’s any banned books in my area or not; but I hope there isn’t. But, you know what they say; “You can’t predict the future.”

I think banning books are bad. Banning books are bad because people won’t know what happened in the past. Everyone should read the books they want to read. If they banned a book that I like I would get mad. I think people in the countries are mad about it to.

My opinion on banned books is that banning books is bad. I think this because this is a free country and we can read what we want. One example is in the south they don’t want kids to learn about the past. Another reason why I think this is bad is because kids should be able to read about slavery to get a good glimpse on what people had to deal with back then. My last reason is that I think people should be able to read what ever they want because they might want to learn about the past. This is my opinion on banned books.

Ben P. C1D1 Ms.Reese said...

I think banning books is a bad thing. In some places books are banned because there are certain events that happened related to history in the place of were the book is read. People should be able to have the rite to read what ever book they want to because reading is good for you it teaches you and it gives you information that you never even knew. I know that people don’t want you to read a certain book in that area because there might be some stuff that happened there or is related to the events that happened there. My class we read Bridge to Terabithia and it was a good book I do know why it’s banned because there is a little girl that died but in the real world that stuff happens all the time. There are so many good books out there that are banned in some areas I don’t know why but like I said I think it’s wrong to do that. That’s why I think banning books is a bad thing.

Alex M C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

I think there shouldn’t be banned books. I think that because people should know about things that happen epically if it happens where they are. Banned books also limit what people can read. I think people would not be happy about people telling them what to read. I think they could be advised not to read the book but not told to not to read it at all. That is why I think there shouldn’t be banned books.

Shannon S C1D1 Ms.Reese said...

I think that banning books is wrong because it takes away our freedom from reading the books that we want to read. I think that because when we want to read books they limit the books that we can read. Down in the south east they won’t allow books that have slavery and the Civil War because they don’t want the people of their state to know about the states wrong doings. I also think that it is right that the people should know because then they can know about the past even if it was wrong of the state to do. When the people read about the history they could feel that the state has done wrong things in the past, but that also might be okay if they know that they feel bad about the actions and decisions, and they know that slavery and war won’t happen again between the south and the north because the states have reunited and made peace after the war.

I think that banning books is wrong. I think that it is wrong because people should have the right to learn and believe about what they read. I don’t get why people would want to take books away from children and also places where you are supposed to read. It is not fair because we are supposed to have a right that is supposed to let us read. If people want to know what happened to people in wars then they should be able to read. Yea people are going to die in books well that’s just the way life is. Though I do realize some styles of books are not appropriate for children they should not have the right to take books away from readers. This is what I think on banned books.

Marissa S. C1D1 Ms Reese said...

I think that banned books shouldn’t be banned because people should be able to read what they want. Also just because the books involve lets say slavery, people in the south west wouldn’t want people reading books about it because they don’t want them knowing what they are doing to the people. Also I strongly disagree that books should be banned because I am not that big of a reader but I would hate it if I went somewhere and was reading a book and was told that I couldn’t. People should be able to read what they want when they want. So I positively say that people should read what they want. Thank you for listening to what I have to say about banned books.

Alicia H. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

Banning books is awful; people should be able to read what they want, when they want. I can understand if the book is REALLY mature and it is restricted to a certain age or grade, but a whole state banning a single book , that’s a little overboard. If a book was banned in New York and people were signing a petition, I would write my name so many times. Banning books is just sad, not just for the author but for everyone, because most of the time a banned book is a good if not great read. What gives anyone the right to tell you that you can’t read a book? It’s not like we’re driving drunk. I would NEVER ban a book; people should be able to read anything they want and it is a right to read, not a privilege. A RIGHT.

Taylor A c1d1 Mrs.reese said...

Banned books should not be allowed if will hurt other people’s culture. If a book hurt ones culture some bad things could happen. Even though banned books aren’t part of the constitution it still could affect many. I would be angry if someone told me that I couldn’t read a book that I really wanted to. I can see why other people would be angry. In the Bill of Rights one of the statement are freedoms of press so a lot of people would want to state that amendment. I believe that banned books should be allowed ware it will hurt people

Joseph B. H1 Ms.Reese said...

I think people should be able to read banned books because people should have a choice of what they want to read. Also even though some parts of history can be graphic people should have the right to know them, like stories of the South that tell horrible condition of the slaves should be allowed because that is a part of our history. If people don’t here those parts people won’t understand history. Even stories like The Bridge to Terabithia are graphic; it is a great story that shows real life events that might happen.

Mckensi D. H1 Ms. Reese said...

I like the idea of some books being banned. There are many reasons why I agree with this idea. I agree with this idea because in some books, for example, the series Twilight by Stephanie Meyer has some inappropriate accusations. In these books, some parents, even teachers, agree that books like these are somewhat inappropriate. There is also the book’s that involve death which is not good for some children to read because you don’t want them to be scared. The other types of books have scary details and violence that shouldn’t be said in some books. For example, in violent books, there is expected to be blood, guts, and shooting.

Kendall R. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

I believe that books should not be banned. It is unfair that people can have freedom but they are not allowed to choose the books they want to read! I believe parents hold the right to choose whether they let their child read the books they choose. Books are ways to leave your live and escape to somebody else’s. Just to sink away into a totally different world so you can just forget about everything, and get sucked into something you are intrigued by. I have read Twilight by Stephanie Myers and it is a banned book in some places. It’s a phenomenal book and everybody should be able to enjoy it.

Sydney B. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

I don’t like the idea of books being banned. I think it is unfair that people don’t have the right to choose what they want to read. Although it might not be the best subjects in books, we find them interesting. I read the Twilight series by Stephanie Myers and I loved them all. I have to admit there are some things sort of inappropriate about it but we are all smart enough to have our own opinions. My final decision is that books should not be banned.

Toney C. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

My opinion on banned books is that it is not right to banned books because, you should have the freedom to read which ever book you want. Like books on slavery should not be banned in the southeast because that where slavery mostly happened, and you should have the freedom to learn what has happened in the past if you want to. Also you should be able to read about books where people died because in some states you can’t for some reason. In the book Bridge to Terabithia a girl named leslie died and in some states for that reason it is banned. So, in my opinion, that is why I think banning books is wrong.

Alexis S. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

I feel like book banding is a horrible idea because, if people told me what I can and can’t read I might get mad. I should choose a book that might be good for my reading level with out some other person telling me that I can’t. Others might think the same if a person told them they can’t. People might want to go to another level of reading. I would like to read “Hunger Games. If I could read the Hunger Games then I would be that strong of a reader. Some other book that I read was Number the Stars, Bridge to Terabithia and Harry Potter. And I’m still reading more!

Matt S. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

I think that ban books should be ban because people should have their own desire to read any books that they would like. Banned books are very bad because most people want to read good books like Harry Potter, Bridge to Teribithia, or Twilight. Some people think that banned books are good because they keep kids from learning the history from the past. Children should learn about our history when they are young, not to freak them out, but to let them know what our world was like in the past. They should also learn about fantasy books that are ban. People should get to read what they want instead of people choosing what books they read.

Brad K. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banning books should not be allowed. Nobody should have the right to tell other people what they can and can’t read. For instance people that believe in Christianity don’t read books with magic or monsters. People in the south also don’t want people reading about things that they did in the past. Banning books is a terrible thing to do and should be illegal so people across America can read whatever they want to read. This is my opinion on banning books.

Keeley K. A2 Mrs.Reese said...

I don’t think that book banning is a good idea. People should be able to read the books they want to. If the people don’t want those books to be read then they just shouldn’t read them, they don’t have to ruin it for everybody. The ALA has made a bad decision on book banning. Dr. Seuss How the Grinch stole Christmas that is a children’s book they don’t have to think about the books like that.

Angelina S. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banning books is not right. I think this because people should have the right to read what they like and not be told by government officials or other people that they can’t read a certain book. One example is Bridge to Teribithia. This book includes a girl dying in the end. Government officials don’t like this topic so they ban it from school or public libraries. This should not happen because most people have experienced a friend or family member dying or they see it on TV. Like the second amendment people should be able to read anything they want as long as it is ok with you and your parents. This is what I think about Banned Book week.

Andrew B A2 Ms. Reese said...

viI do not agree with the idea of banning books. People have a right to read what they would like to. It should be their own decision. Book banners do not have to read the books they do not like. Nobody can make them. Everyone is entitled to their own decision, and should not be forced to agree with someone else’s opinion, or not be able to have an opinion because the book was banned. Personally, one of my favorite book series is Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. In some places that is banned. I have always loved the Harry Potter series, and imagined being a wizard many times when I was younger. It let my imagination grow. All of these reasons are why I believe book banning should be banned.

Allie M A2 Ms. Reese said...

My belief on book banning is that it’s a parent’s job to tell their child what not to read. When your banning books like The Land or other books about the past you’re not letting some one learn about their states past. Also if people think Twilight is not a book for children why can’t adults read the book? Its not fair for people to take away something you should learn. In the south they banned books about slavery because they didn’t want people to really know what happened. Banned books is a rude thing to do.

Olivia C A2 Ms. Reese said...

In my opinion, I think that banned books are wrong. The first amendment states that we have freedom of self expression. That means that we can read whatever we want. Some of the reasons that books are banned are because of racism, and the people that are/were racist don’t want our next generation to read that. Well, if they didn’t want people to read that then why would they do it? Also, people can read about what they want, that’s why movies and some books are rated PG, PG 13, etc. People have the choice of what they are watching or reading.

Skyler K. A2 Mrs. Reese said...

I think that book banning is ridiculous, it’s completely unreasonable to decide what books can and cannot be read in a certain area. Many of the best books in my opinion such as the second book in the popular Twilight series New Moon, have been banned from the public for reasons unknown to me. If I hadn’t ever know about some of the books I’ve read on the banned books list me as well as my peers and fellow members of the community would be missing out on a wonderful series of stellar books. Therefore, my standing on the issue of book banning stands as no, nobody should be able to tell you what you can and cannot read.

Katie W A2 Mrs. Reese said...

How would you feel if someone told you that you couldn’t read a certain book? You probably wouldn’t like it very much. If you can believe that people actually do that. Some states have banned books from the state. Books such as Twilight, the Harry Potter series, even books by Dr. Seuss. People ban these books because they are considered inappropriate. You could probably see how a ten year old shouldn’t be reading Twilight, but what about classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas? People have banned hundreds of books because they are considered inappropriate, but couldn’t banning books be considered inappropriate?

bailey b a2 mrs reese said...

I don’t think that people can tell us what type of books we can read. I think that we can choose what books we want to read. The first amendment states “freedom of speech” witch means we can write or read what we want, when we want, were we want. In the book Bridge to Terabithia the one girl dies I dint think that books with people that die should be banned.

Kaleb J. C1D1 Mrs.Resse said...

I do not believe that books should be banned. I believe banning books is wrong because it goes against the first amendment. I also believe banning books is wrong because what you read should be up to you or your parents not the government. I believe books should no longer be banned

ben w A2 Mrs. Reese said...

I think that banning books is ok but not ok. I think its ok because some people might feel a book is very offensive to there race and religion. I also think that it is ok because I personally don’t like how some are racist or say swear words and I also do not like to read books or like to write about books. I think that banning books is wrong also because that maybe a lot of people like the kind of books that have swearing and racist remarks in them. Also people wouldn’t care because that was like hundreds of years away or wont care what people say about them.

Chris R. C2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banned books are wrong. I think that it is wrong because people should be able to read what they want to read. For instance books about the Civil war should not be banned in the south just because of what happened with slavery almost two hundred years ago. I also think that it is wrong because some books are good for kids to read so they can learn about the past. One reason that some books are banned is because Christians don’t believe in magic.

Becca R. C2D2 Ms.Reese said...

I think that banning certain books is bad. I think this because people should have the right to read the books that they want to read. One example of this is that in the south, they are banning books about the Civil War. They are doing this because now that they look back on their past, they think that slavery is a horrible idea, and because they lost the war. They shouldn’t do this because it is a part of our history and people should be able to learn about it. That is why I think that banning books is bad.

Kati G C2D2 Mrs. Reese said...

I think that books shouldn’t be banned. People have the freedom to read what they want to read. Besides, the books are being read anyway, why bother trying to get rid of them. The people are banning them because of things like killing and stuff. Everybody’s going to have to learn about it sometime anyway. Also, though banned books have some bad things in them you learn more good than bad while reading a banned book. So go ahead and read a banned book they aren’t that bad.

Sadie K C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banning books is a bad idea. People should be able to read the books they want. When people banned books, other people are missing out on great books because they are not allowed to read them. I think that banning books is unfair to people who want to read them. People should have the freedom to read whatever books they want.

Breanne A. C2D2 Mrs. Reese said...

I think banning books is wrong. You should let people read whatever they like. What if someone likes to read Harry Potter by J.K Rolling? It is their opinion and their choice if the want to read about wizards and witchcraft. You can think that it is wrong and you can ban it in your own home but, I think it is silly to band it from a state or country just because a few people don’t like the idea. Banning Books should not be allowed because people have the right to read what they like.

Dan W. C2D2 Ms.Reese said...

I think banned books are just plain wrong. We live in America, so we should have the right to read what we want. So, the land of the free does not imply to books then. The book The Land talks about the Civil War, people need to know about are history and the worlds, like the Holocaust. Another example is that people die every day, so books with people dyeing are not out of the ordinary. A final example is in books like the Harry Potter series, there are magic and magical creatures. Magic is not real so, why it is a problem that kids read about it. This is why I think banned books are wrong.

spencer b C2D2 Ms.Reese said...

I think banning books is a bad thing. I think this because it’s like discriminating the author. Also if they didn’t want to be known for slave labor or something why did they do that in the first place?! They should deal with it; it’s done and over with the damage is done. I think its good we learn about the past so we learn from our mistakes. Finally I must add one last thing which is we have the amendments and one involves speaking our minds so people just go and ban it, what’s up with that?!

Ryan N C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that books shouldn’t be banned. Books shouldn’t be banned because kids should learn about things that happen on a daily basis. There shouldn’t be book blockers because that’s just mean to the kids and to the authors who wrote the books. Harry Potter is a good book for kids to read. It must have taken J. K. Rowling years to write all of the Harry Potter books. Then to have city ban them! So there shouldn’t be any banned books because kids might want to read books. But since they’re banned the kids can’t enjoy reading as much as they can.

Gareth K. C2D2 Ms. Reeses said...

I do not believe in book banning because I feel that people should be able to read what ever books they I want. People should let parents choose if they want their child reading a certain book. Lots of religious people find Harry Potter to be like studying the devil. People who think that read the books; they would discover that Harry Potter is a great role model. There is also Bridge to Terribithia, that book was banned because of death. Kids can’t be protected from death there whole life, they need to be prepared for what is out there. People shouldn’t be kept from books because of silly reasons. Kids should be able to explore the wonderful world of reading.

Mary H. C2D2 Ms.Reese said...

I do not agree with books being banned. I think this because any one should be able to read whatever they want. I am happy that New York has no book banned. If I go on vacations I would want to read Twilight by Stephanie Meyer because it is my favorite book series. I also want to read the Harry Potter, but if read it if I go down to the southern states, like Florida I probably wouldn’t be able to read it. I hope that New York never banned any books.

Austin C C2D2 Ms Reese said...

I think banned books are a bad thing and I don’t like it. I think banned books are bad because if you’re in a certain state you can’t read a certain book that was banned. I’ve read Crispin the Cross of Lead by Avi and that is one of the banned books. I liked the book and I can’t find it in the southern states like Florida and I won’t like that. My opinion is that banned books are a bad thing.

Dennis D. C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that books shouldn’t be banned. I think that because a lot of banned books are about are history, shouldn’t we get a chance to read something about our history? Some books are banned because of religious belief. People who don’t believe in that shouldn’t read it if they don’t believe it. Examples of banned books are Harry Potter, Civil war books and books about the Holocaust. People should get to read what they want to read That is why I think books should not be banned.

Gabby A. C2/D2 Mrs. Reese said...

I think banning books isn’t a good idea, because everyone should have the right to learn. They could learn about the history in there state or country. A book like Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl teaches important things about the past. The only people who are banned from books are people from the south. Just because there might be different things in the book that they aren’t used to doesn’t mean they shouldn’t read it. In my opinion books being banned is unfair.

Alex S C2D2 Ms. Reece said...

I think book banning is wrong. I think people should be able to read what ever they would like. For example, the book Bridge to Teribithia has the girl dying, so if you don’t like people dying then you shouldn’t read the book. Another example is the book Number The Stars it’s about the holocaust so again if you don’t like people dying don’t read the book. So that’s why I think banning books is wrong.

Lucas S C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think banning books is not a good thing. They should not be banned because people should be able to read what ever they want. It would be harder to pick out books if they were banned because you couldn’t read some of the books you wanted. Some of the books that were banned were good and people would want to read those books. Some books would not be as exciting if there weren’t deaths and other things in them.

Kevin K. C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that it doesn’t make any sense to ban certain books. Most of the books that were banned are books that have something to do with U.S history. For example some books are about the civil war, or slavery, but were made illegal in the southern states. Also in some states, the book The Diary of Ann Frank is about the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a very important event. Another example is Numbering the Stars, this is also about the Holocaust, and people should be able to learn about it. Lastly, the instead of banning books just make sure some people are old enough to read it.

Tyler P. C2D2 Mrs.Resse said...

I think book banning is weird because it makes no sense. I think that we should be able to read anything we want. I don’t understand why someone takes something away because they don’t like it. Though on the other hand if it is very offensive to their culture and may give bad ideas to their people, I see why it is banned. All in all though some books are banned for no good reason, I believe. To conclude I think banning books is kind of weird, and just shouldn’t be done, unless it has a very good reason to ban it. If you think about, how did book banning come about with the first amendment?

Sarah G. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I think books should not be banned. People should be free to read about different ideas and learn about their history. An example of a banned book is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Certain communities ban it because they do not believe in immortality, and do not want others to. Because a book expresses an idea that some people do not believe in, it does not mean that everyone who reads it has the same idea. Even if a person does agree with the strong idea of a book, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. People should not be oppressed by others, and should be able to read any book that they please.

Kelsey V C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think book banning is bad. I think it is bad because there are some terrific books out there that you might not be able to read because somebody thinks that they are inappropriate. You should be able to choose the books that you do and don’t want to read. If you want to read Harry Potter you should be able to. I disagree with book banning.

Joseph P. H1 Ms. Reese said...

I think that books should not be banned because people should be able to read what they want. I think this because people should have the right because it is almost like freedom of speech. Another reason is the author spent a long to writing the book and if the book is banned they can’t make money off it. Also people like to read different things. Last but not least books should not be banned because people all are different and like to read different things just because one person thinks it should be banned not every body does.

Payton B. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I believe that books should not be banned from anyone who would enjoy reading them. Some people believe that other people should not read about things that they believe are inappropriate, offensive, wrong, or scary, but many people don’t think that the situations in these books even fall under these categories. For example, in the book Bridge to Terabithia Leslie dies from drowning in the river, and because of this the book has been banned from some people. I believe that the reason for banning this book is silly. Almost everyone in this world has heard about or experienced death in some way, so trying to hide death from people by not allowing them to read about it wouldn’t help anyone. In the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone many things happen that would never happen in real life. It talks about dragons, fairies, and other mythical creatures, so it may have been banned because it was so unreal. Some people think that it is wrong to pretend and use your imagination, but I think this is a good thing, and that it is fun for kids to read books that make them use their imaginations. Therefore, I do not think these books should be banned. I do believe that sometimes younger kids should not read books that are too mature for them because they may be scared or not understand the situations, but adults should never be told that they cannot read something they want to

Trevor H H1 Mrs.Reese said...

My view on books that are banned is not right. Books are not something to be withheld from society. Books are made for entertainment and education. Just because someone is ashamed of something written, does not mean they have to ban it. We all have the freedom of speech and as a free country we should read what we want to. That is my opinion on books that are banned.

I think that no book should be banned. One reason why I think that books should not be banned is because it is not fair to the author that wrote the book. Also, i don’t think it is fair for the people who want to read that book that is banned. Another bad thing is is that it is all the opinion of the people that ban the books and no opinion of the people in that area. One example of a book that is banned is The Hunger Games and that is the greatest book I have ever read.

Cammy K H2 Mrs. Reese said...

I think it is wrong for books to be banned. I think that everyone should have the right to choose what book they want to read. People in the south have banned books about slavery because they don’t want the children to learn about this. The children should have the right to learn about their past. Books like The Diary of Anne Frank and Number the Stars shouldn’t be banned just because of religion. Some people like to read about religion. It even said in the second amendment that you have the right to read anything you want. This is my opinion about books being banned.

Hannah K. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I feel that banning books should not be encouraged. According to the first amendment of the constitution all Americans are allowed the right to read what they want. In the south, towns are banning books on slavery. I personally think that towns are just disgusted that their ancestors could have ever treated people like that. Other books are banned because of religion. For example, Harry Potter is banned from several places because it involves the use of magic and many Christian families are against the idea of their children believing that magic exists even as little kids. I personally think that Harry Potter would be good for young readers because it will encourage their imagination. Lastly some books are banned for being violent or involving death. I understand that death and young children do not mix well but I feel that the decision should be mainly up to the parents because all children deal with death in a different way. I do not agree with the book banned and I am happy that I can read what I choose.

I think that banning books is bad. I think it is bad because authors spent time making the book. I also think that banning books is bad because some books are based on history and people should learn about those topics. I think people are offended because of deaths, religion, or culture. People should not banned books outside of school .Books should not banned books outside of school because people should be able to choose what books they want to read.

Michael C C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

My opinion on banning books is that the people who want to learn more about what happened in the past. Also I think that this is a bad idea because people won’t know much as much about it. Also I think that some people would like to learn about it. It is also a bad idea because people won’t even get an idea about what everyone else that is older knows.

Oliver C H1 Mrs. Reese said...

I believe that books should not be banned. Someone should be able to pick if they want to read a book. Just because someone doesn’t believe you should read it doesn’t mean that other people wouldn’t want to read it. Some banned books are popular books that a kid might enjoy reading. Harry potter is an example for a good book that is banned. Some one might like learning about fictional things like wizards. They might never find out what they are interested in. For example I am interested in Greek mythology and I found out when I started reading about it.

Harley H H2 Ms. Reese said...

I do not believe that books should be banned. I believe that people should be able to read any book they want. People need to learn about the past and books are one way for them to do so. If you banned books they are not going away they will just not be around for you to read. Books like the diary of Anne Frank should not be banned because it is a part of our history and we need to learn about our history.

Jordan K. C2D2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banned books should not be banned. I get why people would ban books because of offensive actions, ideas, events, and language. Harry Potter enforces witchcraft which is believed to be evil. Literature such as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games involves death, which people think is wrong for literature. Banning these great books will make people miss out on great reads.

Jeremy D. H1 Mrs. Reese said...

I think that banning books is a little understandable but not that reasonable. People should be able to read what ever they want in school. Reading is meant to be entertaining and if there was a really gory reader and a new gory book came out and that reader was dying to read it for a school project and they ban it that would be very unfair to the reader. But on another hand banning books sometimes could be acceptable because if there were a person that did not like gory books could become completely paranoid and scared and believe in things that couldn’t even be close to being realistic.

Maddie B. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I don’t like the idea of banning books because I think people should be able to read what they want. I understand some books are inappropriate for children but it is their parents/guardians decision what their child is reading and it is a personal preference. The first amendment says we have freedom of expression, but banning books is taking that away from us. The book Bridge to Teribithia is banned in some places because someone dies, but I think we have all heard about, read about, or experienced someone dying in our lives. So many stories like that are on the news so I don’t understand banning a book because of that. Those are my thoughts on banning books.

MikalaR H2 Ms. Reese said...

I personally think that banning books is stupid. I understand why people would do it, but I think it’s unreasonable. Just because the book offends you doesn’t mean it offends everyone else. In the constitution, it says everyone has the right to read what they want. So why can’t we? I feel it is important to be able to read books that you want and not have to only read books that people say you can. So I think it’s really stupid for people to do that, say people can’t read these books.

Taylor H. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I do not agree that there should be such thing as banned books. I believe that people should be able to read what they want. If a book did have some things that were against someone’s religion that person would know their religion, and not read the book. I do like the twilight series, and for that to be banned for some people is not good because they are missing out on a good story. I would think someone would want to read twilight because it is a good story, but someone would not be able to because of different beliefs. That person who has that belief, should not read the book and that is their decision, so it should not be banned because the people choose what they read.

My opinion on banned books isn't positive. Kids in places like the south never get to learn about there countries past because of banned books. If all books were allowed then people who wanted to read about certain things could and people who didn't want to don't have to. Its not fair to people who want to learn more. The country is trying to protect everyone from there past when it already happened. You cant change the past, no one can. It might be a good thing to learn out it so if it happens again you can learn from it and know what to do. That is why i think that banning books is not fair and shouldn't be done.

I think that banning books in states is not a good way for children to learn about past lives and history wherever they live. I also think it is a bad idea to ban books because, if there are books that a child wanted to read to learn about past life it would not give them an oppurtunity to learn more . I get that some religons have rules but not everyone in the state has the same religon or beliefs. I think that everyone should have a say in what there rules are in the state. We live in a country that has freedom and oppurtunities, to make your own choices and decisions on how we live and what our country has.

Kaylee C. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

My opinion about banned books is good because some people want to read books that they didn’t get to read but they don’t get a chance to because the book is banned. Now that this year is banned books people will get to read the books they want that are banned. Also some books were banned in the south because of slavery, and some books were band because people were dying and some books are about people dying. Bridge to Terabithia is a book that a girl name Leslie died. That is a reason in some states that’s why books are banned. I think it is not fair to the people that want to read the book they want but cant because it is banned for those reasons. So my that is my opinion about banned books.

Cooper B. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I believe that having banned books is a bad thing. One example of a banned book is Bridge to Terabithia because in the end someone dies, that is a bad reason to ban a book because most people hear about death everyday on the news. Another Banned book is Harry Potter people want they want people want there kids not believe in magic. I think that’s a bad reason because kids and adults sometimes just want to have some fun and use their imagination. Also I think people ban books because it could be against their religion, now this is a better answer to ban books but I still don’t believe it is fair to ban books. I believe anyone should be aloud to read any book they want no matter what.

Jack C. A2 Ms. Reese said...

Book banning is trying to have certain books removed from places.People do this because they do not like what is in some books so they try try and stop people from reading them.I think that books should not be banned just because some people dont like them.It goes against the first amendment and makes it so people can't read what they want. Book banning is wrong and should be stopped.

Sarah H. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I believe that book banning is not a good idea. People should not have the power to decide that books should be banned. For example, in some southern states Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution cannot be taught in schools. This puts the power of religious beliefs over scientific evidence. People should be able to read the evidence and decide what they think for themselves. People should be allowed to read a variety of things and form their own conclusions. It is very unfortunate that some people are not allowed to read banned books. I believe that individuals should decide what books they want to read regardless of their age. Only you know whether or not you’re ready for the book of your choice. Sometimes, the best way to learn this is to learn by your mistakes. The desire to learn should be encouraged and having the choice of what you read makes you want to learn more.

Christina B. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

My opinion on banned books is that it is unfair to people who want to read the books. I have read Bridge to Teribithia and believe it is a very good book and that it should not be banned. Even if people do not want to read the books they should at least have the option. Some books are banned because of what happened in the past. I think that what happened in the past should stay in the past and not affect what people read. The First Amendment in the Constitution says that people have the freedom to read any book they want.

Dennon F H1 MRS.Reese said...

I think that banning books is not a good decision because many people like reading and it’s a way to forget the world and forget their problems. Another reason is it’s a way of learning for adults and kids with many different types of time periods and different scenes. Also people are all different in their own way so they could choose any kinds of books they mite like. There are many types of books people mite like to read like mystery, horror, humor, historical fiction, and many more. Reading books also can help with spelling and gust reading faster and more fluently for kids and adults. Books also help with learning the wildlife like were they live and what they eat. They can also help you with spelling words. Books can be used in many different way so why ban them.

Hanna T. A2 Ms. Reese said...

I strongly dislike book banning. Why keep us from reading what we want to read? We should be able to read the books that we want to read. In the book Bridge to Terabithia, a character in the story dies. That happens in real life all the time, doesn’t it? The majority of us have lost a loved one like that, so why can’t we read about it in a story? Down in the South, they ban books about slavery, because they are most likely embarrassed about their history. But why should we not be able to read about our own country’s history? Good or bad, we can still learn from it and correct our mistakes, not just hide it away. Another reason they try to ban books is to suppress our imagination. They don’t want us to learn about certain ideas and certain opinions, and I think that is totally wrong. This is why I am against book banning.

BriannaI A2 Mrs. Reese said...

I really dislike banned books because people should be able to read what they want to read whenever they want to read it. I believe that banning books to some people in our world is wrong. I also think that it is stupid to ban books when some of them are totally fine and are not inappropriate such Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by: J.K. Rowling .Some books are banned in the south because it is most likely of their embarrassment of our country’s history. I mean why hide a kind of thing like our own country’s history from us? My final opinion is that book banning is dumb.

Maggie B. A2 Ms. Reese said...

My opinion for books being band is that it should not happen. The types that government official and other people don’t like to read is the type of book adults and children enjoy reading. I understand banning books for kids because of the books age level but adults should be able to read what they want to. I hope the people banning these excellent books understand that is its bad to ban all of these books. That is my opinion for books being banned in area’s all around the world.

Alex M. A2 Ms.Reese said...

I believe banning books is a bad idea because you should be able to read whatever book you want. Books like The Land and Anne Frank the Diary of a Young Girl are excellent books that tell about history of the world and the United States. Us children need those books because what would we read in English, Literacy, and Social Studies? I have read some of the books on the banning list like Twilight, Bridge to Terribitha, Harry Potter and Anne Frank the Diary of a Young Girl and they were all so wonderful if kids never got to read them it would be unfair! Authors wrote those books for a reason and obviously their good books or they wouldn’t get published. Books are important to American society and they allow us to use our imagination and that’s why I believe books are important not to ban!

Grace R. H2 Ms.Reese said...

Books are special. Before TV and the making of computers children mostly read books for entertainment. To ban books is to change the Bill of Rights. In America we have the freedom to choose for ourselves. We should be able to choose what books we wish to read. Sure, if your parents do not want you to read a certain book until you get older you should respect their decision. But if the majority of people don’t want you to read a book not including your parents you have every right to read that book. Down in the south communities have banned some slavery books most likely Uncle Tom’s Cabin which is a very realistic story about slavery. I believe young minds should be exposed to this because it is history and the main reason we study history is so it doesn’t happened again.

Kyle Lucier A2 Mrs.Reese said...

I don’t think that people should ban books because we should not be told what books we can and can’t read. For example Bride to Terabithia is a great book just like Harry Potter is too. It’s against the first amendment (freedom of speech) to ban certain books because someone dies or something else. It is not fair that we can’t learn about some of our history through books. I think that books should not get banned.

Taylor C H2 said...

Book banning is big in the US and I think it’s wrong. It’s wrong because everyone should be able to read whatever they want. In the South they don’t want the kids to read about slavery and how wrong it was. They know that now, we can’t undo history. It did happen they need to get over the fact that the kids need to learn about the history. In Germany books were published about the Holocaust they don’t believe the history. So they are banned. Book banning is so wrong and shouldn’t be done.

Ashley E. H2 Ms. Reese said said...

I think books should not be banned unless you decide that for yourself. People should not be allowed to tell you what you can and can not read. For example if part of your religion is not to believe in sorcery than that’s ok but really people should be able to tell you that you can not read “Harry Potter” or “Twilight”. I would hate not being able to read the books I wanted. That’s what I think about this topic.

Alex W. H2 Ms.Reese said...

I think banned book week is a bad thing to do because it strips people of there freedom. Like in Ann Frank’s diary it is a banned book but it is based on a real thing about the history of World War 2. I think some of the banned books are some of the best books. If they do banned books it can take away from our history. I think banned books are a bad thing because we have the freedom to read what we want to read.

Cameron S. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banning books is not right in some places. I think that because people should be able to read whatever they want to read. I also think that it’s not right because people should be able to learn about their history. There are a couple more reasons why I think it’s wrong to ban books. I think it’s wrong because people could have more of a choice to pick a book and to learn.

Abbi Z h1 said...

I believe that banning books is wrong. People have the right to know what happened in the place that they live. Even if the state or country isn’t happy with how they handled a situation everyone has the right to learn about historical events. That happened in the past. Banning books is not a way to handle a situation that happened a long time ago. All books should be able to be read by everyone everywhere.

Lena P. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I believe banning books should not be prohibited. It is not right that you can’t read a book that you want to read! It’s unfair to the people. For example, in the South they can’t read books about slavery. They should be able to read and learn about there history. People should have the choice to what they want to read. I think banning books is not a good idea, because people should be able to read anything they want. For example, if someone only liked a type of book that is banned they might not like reading at all. Another example is if someone liked fantasy books, like Harry Potter, it would help their imagination grow. Another reason why it isn’t a good idea have books banned is because if a teacher in an area where books on the Holocaust are banned, it would be hard to teach with only a text book, but it would be much easier to read The Diary of Anne Frank. It’s also just not fair that people can’t read some books in some areas.

Savanna C. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I believe that books should definitely not be banned. Books give people ideas, inspiration, and interest in life. Books also help you learn stuff about things like your history and your town’s origin. Also, you may find that things like fantasy or horror/ creepy things are really interesting to you. Books give you a wide variety on different topics. The banning of books goes against the first amendment making it illegal. Why in the world would people go through the trouble of doing something like banning books even though it is illegal anyways?

Charlie O. H2 Ms. Reese said...

I believe that people should have access to all books. Banning books is wrong. The reason I think this is because all books have a point or a story worth hearing. Also if historical books are banned how will we know about are past. Another reason is what about other people who want to read the book.

Brandon h A2 Ms. Reese said...

I think that banned books are not a good thing. I think that people should be allowed to read what they want. Just because a book has death doesn’t mean that they should be banned. If the reader chooses to read the book that is their choice and if the reader is under the age the parent should have the right to choose if the child should be able to read the book. Banned books should be the readers choose.

James L. C1D1 Ms. Reese said...

I think banned books are a bad thing. I think that because we should be able to read any book in all fifty states in the USA. I would feel angry if someone were to tell me I could not read a book I would like. I would feel that way because in the 1st amendment it says I have a right to speech. The only way that I would not read books if my parents told me not to.
